Wolverine duo pushed selves in class, on field BOYS LACROSSE
June 18, 2007 12:35 am
BY JIM McCONNELL
From the first time they shared a baseball diamond as fourth graders, Will Parker knew Iric Bressler
was the type of natural athlete who could play any sport and make it look effortless.
It wasn't that way for Parker, a self-described "sort of pudgy kid," who knew that he would have to
work for whatever he hoped to accomplish in sports.
Even when they got to high school, while friend and teammate Bressler was busy shattering all of the
scoring records for North Stafford's lacrosse team, Parker toiled in anonymity, quietly establishing himself as the Wolverines'
best defender.
And after leading North Stafford to the Northwest Region championship, both closed out stellar high-
school careers this spring by repeating as The Free Lance-Star's All-Area lacrosse players of the year.
"Nobody ever thought I would be that good," Parker said last week. "It was definitely a driving factor.
You can either agree with what people are saying and quit, or you can work harder to prove them wrong."
Bressler and Parker proved themselves on the field and in the classroom. Both graduated summa cum laude,
members of an exclusive class of students who completed four years of high school coursework with a grade-point average over
4.0.
As a result, they essentially had their pick of Ivy League-caliber colleges. While Parker chose Division
I Lafayette, Bressler passed on several D-I offers and will study engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology, home to
one of the nation's top Division III lacrosse teams.
"It would've been cool because everyone understands that Division I is the top level, but I didn't
want to go four years and have lacrosse and nothing else," Bressler said.
Parker acknowledged it will be "really weird" when he walks onto the practice field next spring and
doesn't see Bressler. The two have played lacrosse together since they picked up the sport in seventh grade, and they have
spent most of the last four years honing their skills against each other in practice.
Bressler, whose father is North Stafford's varsity boys soccer coach, played soccer and football before
he decided to focus entirely on lacrosse. That choice paid off when he became the most prolific in a long line of high-scoring
Wolverine attackmen.
"He's real shifty with his feet and has an amazing stick," Parker said. "When you're playing a kid
like that in practice and you strip the ball, you know you've made a good play because that doesn't usually happen to him."
Just as Bressler's skills were perfectly suited for offense, Parker was drawn toward the defensive
end early in his lacrosse career. He's a bit undersized (5-foot-9, 170 pounds) for an elite defender, but makes up for it
with quickness, agility and a short memory.
"People are going to score on you. It's a high-scoring game. You have to get past that," Parker said.
Even though Parker faced the opposition's most dangerous offensive threat every game for the last two
years, the list of players who have beaten him in a one-on-one showdown is short.
"When you see him shutting down a player who's used to scoring three or four goals a game, that's really
impressive," Bressler said.
Now that they've become the big fish in a relatively small pond, both Bressler and Parker welcome the
challenge of starting over again next season as college freshmen.
"I want to see how I stack up. You can watch the game on television, but it's two or three times faster
in person," Bressler said.
Added Parker: "You never really know how good people are until you show up. I'm really looking forward
to it."

Cormier's amends satisfies Cavaliers
May 30, 2007 12:35 am
BY KURT NICOLL
T.J. Cormier vacated the doghouse lickety-split and moved into to the penthouse in a matter of 30 seconds.
The veteran attacker scored the game-winner in W.T. Woodson's 6-5 overtime victory over Chantilly last
week, ensuring the Cavaliers a berth in the Group AAA state boys lacrosse quarterfinals against North Stafford.
With just under seven minutes left in the third quarter and the Liberty District champions up by two
goals (6-4), Cormier received a 30-second game misconduct for protesting a little too strongly a turnover call by the officials.
Cormier quickly atoned for losing his cool, racing on the field as the penalty expired to set up Robbie
Roberson's goal.
"When you come out of the box like that, coach always says, 'go to the ball,'" he commented following
Woodson's nail-biting 9-8 victory. "So I was going to the ball and Robbie, Reid [Mayberry] and I have a great connection.
As soon as he [Robbie] called my name, I saw him."
Woodson's offensive diversity, coupled with North Stafford's inability to convert on two power-play
opportunities and several late-game mistakes proved costly.
"Honestly, I felt like we had it the whole time. We made a couple of big mistakes that hurt us," Wolverine
defender Will Parker surmised. They had some good players on offense, but one of the strongest things about that team is the
way they ran their offense. Not necessarily individual weapons, they just had a really good team.
"Toward the end it got a little frantic," he added. "If we had settled it down, maybe we would have
been OK, but we were trying to get that goal. We had chances; there were good plays, they just didn't pan out for us."
Cavalier goalie Ross Fernandez turned in a solid game, totaling four of his 10 saves in the final quarter
as the Wolverines mounted a desperate bid to tie the game and force a possible overtime period.
"Our defense didn't do too well in the beginning, but we stepped it up," said Hernandez, who had played
summer lacrosse with several of the North Stafford players in the past. "They were piling a lot of people in the crease and
it was difficult to pick up the ball.
"We knew it was a win-or-lose game, so we played our hardest."
The Cavaliers (14-5) are playing with a sense of purpose. Four times they were unofficial state champions
before the Virginia High School League made lacrosse a sanctioned sport--now they want to win championship rings of their
own.
Woodson coach Jon FitzGerald described Fernandez as the heart-and-soul of his young defense.
North Stafford (17-3) received solid offensive efforts from Brendan Sullivan (three goals and two assists)
and sophomore Ned Parker (three goals) but could not keep up with the opposition's high-octane attack.
"We have been down before," Sullivan commented concerning the Wolverines' grit to fight on until the
final seconds expired. "Our team knows what to do. We stayed calm.
"We put faith in our offense. We just made one more mistake than they did and the good team is going
to convert on it."
Cormier, who had two goals to go along with his critical assist, praised North Stafford as a worthy
opponent, but indicated the Wolverine defense was faced a formidable challenge.
"We put six kids on the offensive end who are scorers," he reflected. "It's impossible for the defense
to stop us when we're rolling. And we proved that today."
The state tournament resumes tomorrow night with the boys semifinals being played at Robinson High
School and the girls semifinals at Westfield.
Saturday's finals are set for 6 and 7:30 p.m. at Westfield.
Although North Stafford is graduating 14 players, Sullivan expressed a belief that the Wolverines can
be contenders for another state berth in 2008.
"The underclassmen helped carry the team this year," said the midfielder, who will be attending the
Navy Academy's prep school next fall. "I think if they work hard like North Stafford has the tradition of doing, I think they'll
be contending next year."

Capella delivers winning score
May 26, 2007 12:35 am
By MATT EPPERS
Having already faced Albemarle three times this season--the third just a week ago--North Stafford's
lacrosse team should have been sick of seeing the Patriots.
On the contrary. Albemarle is only team the Wolverines wanted to play in last night's Northwest Region
championship game--especially after North Stafford lost last Friday's Commonwealth District title game to the Patriots on
their home field.
The Patriots are the only team North Stafford wanted to beat for a regional title.
Jesse Capella's goal with just under three minutes remaining broke a 9-all tie, and the Wolverines'
defense made it stand as North Stafford captured the Northwest Region crown with a 10-9 victory.
"For me, this is all about these kids," Wolverines coach Bill Ayres said. "I feel so happy for them
because they've worked so hard. They came out and just wanted it so bad."
The win was North Stafford's first-ever over Albemarle in postseason play, and just its third overall.
The Wolverines also atoned for a subpar performance fraught with mental miscues in that district final,
which they dropped 11-6.
"This feels amazing right now," senior defenseman Will Parker said. "We lost to them last week, and
that was a real defining moment for this team. We got it together, had some good practices and got the job done tonight."
North Stafford (17-2) never trailed in this one. Albemarle, however, was never far behind.
Senior attacker Iric Bressler scored with eight minutes left to put the Wolverines up 9-7.
Stephen Murray's goal with 5:38 left pulled the Patriots within one. Brent Montgomery then tied the
game at 9 with a breakaway goal at the 3:29 mark.
"They made it hard on us. We had to earn it the whole way," said Albemarle coach Patrick McAdams. "I
thought we might get one more crack at it."
As it turned out, the Patriots (14-6) would not get another chance to take the lead.
Less than a minute after Montgomery tied the game, North Stafford went ahead for good.
Midfielder Brendan Sullivan hit Capella with a perfect pass as he was cutting toward the middle of
the field. Capella fired the game-winner from about six yards out past Patriots goalie Gus Cramer.
"Our decision making was very good, and our execution was very good," Ayres said. "Last time, we didn't
do very well at either one of those."
After a brief scrum, the Wolverines controlled the ensuing face-off after Capella's goal and held possession
the rest of the way.
Any hopes Albemarle had of regaining possession were erased by a pair of slashing personal fouls in
the final two minutes that gave North Stafford a two-man advantage.
"With less than two minutes and you're two men down, it's tough to win that way," McAdams said. "We
just couldn't claw back in."
Murray led all scorers with four goals and two assists. Bernie Mowbray added three goals for the Patriots.
Sophomore attacker Ned Parker led North Stafford with three goals. Bressler had two goals and two assists
in an effort he said was much better than his self-described dismal one a week ago.
"I settled down, and trusted my teammates more," Bressler said. "Last game, I put way too much weight
on myself."
Bressler and the Wolverines will certainly relish their region championship. However, they will very
soon divert their attention to W.T. Woodson High School.
The Wolverines will host the Cavaliers on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the VHSL state championship.
Albemarle visits Western Albemarle that night.
"I'm thinking about Woodson, but I'm about to go have some fun with my friends and celebrate," Bressler
said.
He won't celebrate too long or too hard, though. The Wolverines return to practice today at 8 a.m.

BOYS LACROSSE NORTH STAFFORD 19, CULPEPER 5 wolverines roll to regional final
May 24, 2007 12:35 am
BY TODD JACOBSON
During Iric Bressler's
four-year boys' lacrosse career at North Stafford, he's proven time and again he can score goals. But if the Wolverines' 19-5
Northwest Region semifinal win over Culpeper last night proved anything, it's that Bressler is most comfortable on the other
end of his team's offensive outbursts.
Sophomore Ned Parker scored
a game-high six goals, but Bressler had eight assists and two goals to help the Wolverines overcome a slow start in a rout
of Culpeper that ended the Blue Devils' 16-game winning streak and earned North Stafford a berth in the Group AAA state tournament
The Wolverines (16-2) also
earned a rematch with Commonwealth District rival Albemarle in the region title game at 6 p.m. tomorrow.
Culpeper (16-1) will host
a consolation game against Osbourn at 6 p.m. tomorrow for the region's final state tournament berth.
"We are more of a momentum
team," Bressler said. "Once we start going and we start scoring everybody tends to settle down and everyone makes better decisions."
No one was making better
decisions than Bressler, the Wolverines' single-season scoring record-holder.
After Culpeper jumped out
to an early 2-1 lead, Bressler weaved through traffic to tie the game at 2-2 with 2:47 left. Then, the senior assisted on
five of the team's next six goals to help the Wolverines build a 10-3 halftime lead.
"He always does that,"
said Parker, who was on the receiving end of three of Bressler's assists. "He sees the field better than anyone. I can see
him glance and he looks at me and you can tell when he's about to pass it to me. He just hits people and you have no idea
where it's going to be at."
Sometimes, Bressler takes
it too far, coach Bill Ayres said, passing up his own chances in an attempt to feed the ball to his teammates. But it was
hard to complain when Bressler's passes so often ended up in North Stafford goals.
While Parker scored six
for the Wolverines, senior Ian Fitz-James added five goals and senior Brendan Sullivan had three goals and two assists.
"He does what he needs
to do," Ayres said. "Sometimes I've got to get on him about taking the shots when you've got it. He's looking to set people
up. Tonight his vision was all over the place. He was hitting people everywhere. He can put it on the money."
Culpeper, the regular season
and tournament champions of the Cedar Run District, struggled to keep up with North Stafford's frenetic attack. The Blue Devils'
offense was out of sync, its defense looked confused, and James Reid, one of the Blue Devils' captains and main scoring threats,
was nursing a groin injury.
Clearly, Culpeper was reeling,
giving coach Scott Found a tough choice.
While North Stafford was
probably already looking ahead to tomorrow's rematch against Albemarle, which beat the Wolverines in the Commonwealth District
championship game, Found, too, was looking ahead.
"Do you want to cut your
losses and save it for Friday and go to states or do you want to stay out here with everybody banged up and try to come back?"
Found said.
Found chose to pull several
of his starters from the game, resting them for tomorrow's match-up against Osbourn. North Stafford kept most of its starters
in the game through the start of the fourth quarter, drawing criticism from Found.
"This is probably the nastiest
school as far as players, coaches and fans that I've ever played in my entire career as a coach, and that's 12 years," Found
said. "When you pull all your starters and they leave all their first string in, that shows the class of the coaches and the
players that they are out there."

Wolverines lock up district title
May 5, 2007 12:35 am
By MATT EPPERS
By MATT EPPERS
What potentially could have been a blowout turned into a nail-biter last night at Colonial Forge.
Trailing by four goals at halftime, the Eagles lacrosse team staged a furious third-quarter comeback
against first-place North Stafford.
However, the visiting Wolverines held Colonial Forge scoreless in the fourth quarter, and North Stafford
held on for a 10-8 Commonwealth District win.
The victory clinched the Wolverines' first-ever district lacrosse title. But there wasn't much of a
celebration afterwards, and coach Bill Ayers succinctly summed up the team's emotions.
"We're lucky," Ayers said. "We're lucky we got out of here tonight with a win."
Aedan Herman led Colonial Forge (8-6, 6-4) with three goals and an assist. Playing in his last home
game, senior Ben Irby added two goals and three assists.
North Stafford got major contributions from its top offensive players.
Brendan Sullivan scored four goals and assisted on another. Fellow senior Iric Bressler had two goals
and four assists.
Ned Parker added a pair of goals and an assist.
Sullivan, Bressler and Parker, though, did most of their damage in the first half to help the Wolverines
build a 7-3 halftime lead.
The third quarter belonged to Colonial Forge.
"I think they just out-hustled us," Ayers said. "When the ball hit the ground, they wanted it more.
I think our guys got a little frustrated when things didn't go the way they thought things would."
Momentum actually started to swing the Eagles' way in the waning seconds of the first half.
After a couple deflected shots and a timeout, Irby scored with four seconds left before the break.
The teams alternated a pair of goals each at the outset of the third quarter. North Stafford's lead
remained four at 9-5 with 6:20 left in the quarter.
Then, another score by Irby and one by senior Rob Reddy made it 9-7.
"There was never any quit on our part," Eagles coach Blair Penny said. "We didn't get frustrated. We
didn't get down on ourselves. We just kept playing."
Herman cut the deficit to a single goal just before the third ended.
With time winding down, Herman held the ball on the left side of the net. The junior attacker made
a move past a defender, sprinted toward the goal and put a shot by North Stafford goalkeeper Matt Nelson with three ticks
left on the clock.
"My hat's off to North Stafford. They're a great team," Penny said. "But we felt if we just made the
best of our opportunities, we could get back in the game."
The Eagles did capitalize on their scoring opportunities in the third quarter.
Unfortunately, the opportunities just were not there in the fourth.
Sullivan scored less than two minutes into the fourth quarter to put the Wolverines ahead 10-8.
From there, the Wolverines' defense limited Colonial Forge to a handful of shots. On offense, they
remained aggressive but guarded in an effort to hold possession.
"We didn't play our best lacrosse tonight," Ayers said. "I don't think the kids came mentally prepared
to play. The emotion wasn't there."
Ayers went on: "On the other hand, Colonial Forge did come to play. The did what they needed to do.
They have good athletes, and they played hard tonight."
Despite his team's lack of emotion, Ayers and the Wolverines (11-1, 9-0) finally captured the Commonwealth
District crown that has eluded them in recent years.
North Stafford has dominated the other schools in Stafford County over the years, only to come up short
against district powerhouse Albemarle time and again.
The Wolverines finally figured the Patriots out this year and swept two games from Albemarle.
With the Commonwealth regular season title in hand, North Stafford will have a bye during the first
round of the district tournament next weekend.
"It is huge. We've talked for years about [winning a distrcit title]," Ayers said. "We've just needed
the expectation that we can play with Albemarle. We've done that this year, and now the kids believe."
